Tattoo Aftercare
Looking after a new tattoo properly makes a real difference to how it heals and how it looks once settled. Below is general guidance covering the first few days, the healing period, what to avoid, and when it’s worth getting something checked.
Immediate aftercare
Keep the original dressing on for as long as you’re advised at your appointment, then leave it uncovered to breathe. Wash your hands before touching the area, clean it gently with a mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water, and pat it dry with a clean towel or tissue rather than rubbing. Once dry, apply a thin layer of the aftercare product advised to you — too much can trap moisture and slow healing rather than help it.
Healing timeline
Most tattoos settle on the surface within a couple of weeks, though the skin underneath continues healing for longer than that. Everyone heals a little differently, so this is general guidance rather than a fixed timeline — how quickly things move on for you will depend on the piece itself and how well the aftercare steps are followed.
What to avoid
While it’s healing, avoid soaking the area — baths, swimming, hot tubs — and keep it out of direct sun. Loose clothing over the area is better than anything tight or restrictive, and it’s best to avoid picking or scratching at any scabbing, even if it’s itchy. Let it come away on its own.
When to seek medical advice
Some redness, mild swelling and tenderness in the first few days is normal. If redness spreads, swelling gets worse rather than better, or you notice pus, heat, or a fever, it’s worth getting it checked by a GP or pharmacist rather than waiting it out.
Aftercare after your appointment
Aftercare guidance is given directly after every appointment, specific to the piece you’ve just had done — this page is a general reference alongside that, not a replacement for it. If anything’s unclear after your appointment, get in touch.
